Quick bite of Mug Shot

Instant pasta from the UK!

Just get a mug, pour the contents of a pack into the mug, put boiling water, and after 5 minutes, voila! Pasta!

We tried 3 flavors: Creamy Cheese, Macaroni Cheese, and Tomato & Herb.

The noodles of all three variants are of high quality. Also, all three variants are a little too starchy to the taste. The Creamy Cheese is not cheesy enough; the parsley adds some vibrancy to it, tempering the bland starchy taste. The Macaroni Cheese has good enough, salty cheesy flavor. The Tomato & Herb has hints of acidic tomato flavor. This taste however is drowned by sugar. Also, we can barely taste the herbs.

All in all, these Mug Shot pasta dishes, pwede na, pantawid gutom.

Try them and judge for yourself.

Quick sip of the new Mogu Mogu flavors

There are two new Mogu Mogu variants: Melon and Pink Guva.

The fruit flavors are surprisingly authentic, considering the artificial ingredients. The Melon is just a tad too sweet. The Pink Guava though is really good!

Try these new Mogu Mogu concoctions and judge for yourself.

Quick bite of Choco Banana Pocky

Pocky na lasang saging?! Who would've thought...

Thin, chocolate biscuit sticks with banana cream coating.

The biscuit is light and crisp, not too sweet and tasty. The banana coating has hints of authentic banana flavor. This flavor is coupled with artificial candy sweetness. Not bad though.

Try this Pocky and judge for yourself.

Quick bite of Premium Square Pia

Square hopia from Glory Snack of Indonesia!

They're flaky pastry with filling. There are four variants: Chocolate, Cheese, Mung Bean, and Durian. We tried the Chocolate and Cheese.

The pastry itself is tasty, a tad salty, probably because of the Australian butter. It's light, crisp, and flaky.

The Chocolate filling is pasty and thick, and its color is dark and appetizing. The flavor is OK; it has the right level of sweetness and has hints of bitterness. The taste is not too dairy. Quite good!

The Cheese filling also has the same sticky, thick consistency. Its taste is a little weird. The cheese flavor seems to have some butter and sugar mixed in. Thus, the sharpness and saltiness have been tempered. Quite a letdown.

Try these treats and judge for yourself.

Quick sip of Nescafé Blend & Brew Espresso Roast

It's dubbed as the "boldest" variant of Blend & Brew.

Again, the Nescafé Blend & Brew features ground coffee brewed with liquid creamer. Then, Nescafé Milk is added to the mix, resulting in a[n allegedly] creamier coffee drink.

So, is the Espresso Roast good? Well, it's the best among the three Blend & Brew variants (there's the Original and Silky Roast). This one has a pronounced coffee flavor. Unlike the other two flavors that reek of saccharine sweetness, Espresso Roast has some bitterness and depth. It's quite good actually.

Finally, a 3-in-1 coffee mix that actually has some coffee taste. Yung mga naglipana kasi ngayon sa supermarket, puro lasang asukal!

As for consistency, the Blend & Brew's thickness is not different from that of other instant coffee brands. It's neither milkier nor thicker. False advertising much?

Try it and judge for yourself.

First lick of Buco Delights Ube

It's Selecta's new frozen treat.

It's coconut ice drop with an ube halaya center.

The ube filling is good, its taste is authentic. The ice drop itself is a little too sweet and its coconut flavor can hardly be sensed.

A piece costs Php 13.

First bite at Johnny Kahuku's Hawaiian Shrimp House

Place: Spacious and comfortable. The lighting is warm, so are the colors. The decor is tough looking, with the wooden furnishings and steel-laden walls.

Food: Delicious and fresh!

We ordered the Scampi Set (Php 999, for 2-3 people). It came with the Kahuku Special Scampi, Asian Crispy Squid, Steamed Rice, and Tropical Iced Tea.

The Kahuku Special Scampi featured white shrimps, corn, and baby potatoes, all smothered with sweet garlic butter. All the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. The sauce was well balanced and satisfying. Its sweetness was not sugary but garlicky. Really good!

The Asian Crispy Squid had fried baby squid, chopped peanuts, and crispy dilis. All these ingredients were drizzled with a Caramel Tamarind Glaze. Delicious! Crunchy all around! The baby squid wasn't tough. The saltiness of the peanuts and dilis complemented the sweet sauce. Yummy!

The Tropical Iced Tea was too sweet and had hints of artificial fruit flavor.

We also ordered the Pork Belly Buster (Php 349): grilled pork belly flavored with a sweet garlic soy sauce. It came with a thick sweet-tangy dip. The pork pieces were juicy and tender. The charred flavor of the meat went well with the sweet sauce. The dip was good but this dish worked better with the spicy vinegar found on the dining table.

Price: Considering food quality, taste, and serving size, we found the fare here reasonably priced.

Service: The waiters were friendly and attentive. Waiting time was acceptable.

Johnny Kahuku's Hawaiian Shrimp House is at the New Eastwood Mall.

Quick sip of Livén Alkaline Coffee

It is "the World's 1st alkaline coffee," made by the direct sales company Alliance in Motion Global.

It's alkaline, so it's not acidic, and thus friendly to the stomach. It also has "phyto-energizers" or anti-oxidants that are good for the body. But, does the alkaline coffee taste good?

Livén Alkaline Coffee is too sweet! And we can't sense any coffee flavor, just a weird, herbal, grassy aftertaste.

Try it and judge for yourself.

First sip of the Chocolate Black Tea and Double Chocolate Green Tea Frappuccino

They're the latest Frappuccino variants of Starbucks.

The Chocolate Black Tea (Php 180, Tall) is made with chocolate-tea powder, some java chips, and Earl Grey jelly. It's quite delicious. The earthy tea flavor is not drowned by the chocolate component. And the Earl Grey jelly! Each morsel is teeming with a deep, rounded flavor.

The Double Chocolate Green Tea (Php 175, Tall) features matcha with milk chocolate sauce and java chips. This one is too sweet! The milk chocolate sauce overpowers everything! Good thing there's whipped cream to temper some of the milky saccharine flavor.

Try these new Fraps and judge for yourself.

Quick bite of the New Burger McDo

McDonalds re-introduces its Pinoy-style burger. The New Burger McDo features a "meatier" and "tastier" version of the said sandwich.

We tried one and it tasted like the old Burger McDo. It is meaty, but not meatier. Tasty, but not tastier. In short, nothing new. But hey, we still liked it!

Try it and judge for yourself.

First sip of the Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate Mocha

It's the latest 3-in-1 hot chocolate mix from Swiss Miss. It claims to be made from "premium imported ingredients" and to "awaken our indulgent side."

Is it good? Well, not really. There's an initial hint of chocolate flavor, but no coffee. So how can it be called mocha? Plus, this subtle chocolate taste is quickly drowned by the diabetes-inducing sweetness of sugar and corn syrup (check the list of ingredients!). Yikes!

The only thing premium and indulgent about the drink is its velvety consistency.

All in all, this drink is a letdown.

Try it and judge for yourself.

First bite of the Adobo Flakes Yum Burger

It's the latest Yum Burger variant by Jollibee

It's the Regular Yum with thin strips of pork adobo.

These strips are delicious, sweet and savory. But they don't taste like adobo; there's no hint of acidity. The flavor is closer to that of bistek. Jollibee should serve these "adobo" flakes with rice.

Try it and judge for yourself.

First lick of the Halo-Halo Sundae

It's Jollibee's latest dessert treat.

It's vanilla sundae with coconut strips, kaong, black munggo, caramelized banana, and caramelized langka.

It's delicious! The sweetness level is just right. The halo-halo ingredients are of good quality, especially the crisp coconut meat. The different components complement each other; nothing is overpowering.

Try it and judge for yourself.

First bite of CDO Premium Uncured Bacon

Something for those who want to eat healthy but don't want to give up bacon: the CDO Premium Uncured Bacon!

Thin strips of pork meat that are not treated with nitrate (a chemical for making fertilizers) and nitrite (a kind of salt). Because they're uncured, each piece of this bacon is not salty but has a sweet-smoky, almost ham taste. It's quite good actually.

With this product, one can now feel less guilty about having some crunchy bacon in the morning.

Try it and judge for yourself.

Quick sip of Nescafé Blend & Brew Silky Roast

It's a variant of Nescafé Blend & Brew.

For Silky Roast, ground coffee is brewed in liquid creamer. Then, Nescafé milk is added to the mix, [allegedly] resulting into a, well, silky coffee drink.

Is it really silky? Not really. Its consistency is the same with other instant coffee brands. As for the taste, it has an initial roasted coffee flavor, but this gets immediately drowned by sugary sweetness. Sayang!

Try it and judge for yourself.
