Best of the Philippines: Caramel Cashew Fudge

It's a new flavor from Magnolia.

Smooth caramel ice cream, TEEMING with crisp, yummy Palawan cashew bits.  It's delicious!

The caramel flavor is just right, its sweetness, not overbearing.  And really, for those who love cashews, this treat will satisfy your craving.

Try it and judge for yourself.

El Bonito's

One afternoon, we got hungry after watching a movie.  So we went to the food court for a quick bite.  We spotted El Bonito's and got hungrier when we saw the slices of pizza.  We decided to try their food.

El Bonito's offers three variants: Ham Sweet Ham Hawaiian Style, Very Bacon, and Plenty-o-Pepperoni.  Each slice costs only Php 25.  We got a slice of each flavor.

The crust is thick and soft.  The sauce has a good balance of sweet and tang.  The cheese, creamy and amply salty.

The Ham Sweet Ham Hawaiian Style really has sweet ham as toppings.  The meat and the cheese complement each other well.  Delicious!  Very Bacon has half-cooked bacon, giving the pizza smokiness.  This one's O-K.  We prefer stronger, smokier, better-quality bacon.  The Plenty-o-Pepperoni has onions, bell peppers, and pepperoni.  It's yummy but we wish that the veggies be cooked so they'd be softer and less pungent.

Perfect partner: ice-cold soda.

Try El Bonito's pizza and judge for yourself.

El Bonito's is on the 3rd floor of SM City Masinag.

Famous Belgian Waffles

We were in the mall one time and we were looking for something different to snack on.  We chanced upon the quaint space of Famous Belgian Waffles and smelled the aroma of freshly made Belgian waffles.  We got enticed and decided to try their food.

Famous Belgian Waffles features Belgian waffle sandwiches (folded waffles with various fillings).  We ordered their two bestsellers, the Blueberry and Cream Cheese waffle sandwich and the Chocolate waffle sandwich, plus two more: Ham and Cream Cheese, and Hazelnut waffle sandwiches.

First off, the waffle itself was delicious.  It's not too cakey and heavy on the tummy.  It had a subtle nutty flavor (coconut oil?) and had the right blandness that allowed it to be a good canvass for the filling.

The Blueberry and Cream Cheese (Php 55) was delicious!  The filling had a good marriage of tart and dairy flavor.  Also, the blueberry preserve wasn't too sweet and wasn't cringe-inducing.  The Chocolate waffle sandwich (Php 35) had a chocolate spread that's semi-sweet.  We liked it because it wasn't the usual sugary sweet, milk chocolate that kids love; we appreciated the hint of bitterness.

The Ham and Cream Cheese (Php 55) was also good.  The ham wasn't too salty; the combination of flavors was just right.  The Hazelnut was OK. Its flavor was authentic, but we prefer the Chocolate variant.

The key to enjoying the waffle sandwiches is to eat them hot, fresh from the cooker.  And they're best eaten with good coffee.

Must-eat: Blueberry and Cream Cheese

Go visit Famous Belgian Waffles and try some inexpensive, delicious, and classy snack food.

Famous Belgian Waffles is on the 2nd floor of SM City Marikina.

Coco Quench

It's coconut water from Tropicana.

Is it good?  Hmmm, it's O-K; it doesn't taste bad or anything.  It's just that it lacks something, a certain vitality, or a kind of sweetness that one can only taste from coco water that's straight from the source.

Pinipig Pandan ice cream!

It is one of the flavors featured in Magnolia Ice Cream's Best of the Philippines collection.  The variant Pinipig Pandan highlights the flavors of Pampanga.

Smooth, YUMMY pandan ice cream, generously dappled with jelly and pinipig (toasted glutinous rice) bits.  The sweetness is just right, the subtle flavors blend together really well.  And the different textures make this dessert a delight to eat.

It is really DELICIOUS!

Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling ice cream.  Try this one NOW!

Red Ribbon Pinipig Polvoron

Let cut right to the chase...

The polvoron mixture itself is good.  It has good integrity and is delicious; it has the right balance of sweetness and dairy flavor.

The problem is the pinipig (toasted glutinous rice).  The pinipig used is of low quality; the bits aren't crispy and they taste like cardboard.  In short, stale.

First time: Chicken Charlie

So we were in the mall one morning and dropped by the newly opened Chicken Charlie.  We've been hearing a lot of things about it so we decided to try their food.

We ordered Value Meal A that has a cup of rice and the resto's pièce de resistance, the double-fried chicken.  There were two flavors to choose from: Soy-Garlic and Hot and Sweet.  We chose the former.

Well, it was a let down.  Sure, the chicken was perfectly fried (crispy skin, moist meat).  But it was flavorless.  No soy, no garlic anywhere.  We had no words actually for what we tasted, or more like, not tasted.  And the drumstick was too small.

Because of the bland chicken, we decided not to order anything else.  We judged that if they couldn't do their main faire well, then it's safe to assume that the "side" dishes would be disappointing too.

They say first impressions last.  Too bad Chicken Charlie's wasn't good, at least to us.

Chicken Charlie is on the first floor of SM City Marikina.

Cookie Monster

New ice cream bars from Magnolia!

Velvety, delicious ice cream with a gooey, sweet surprise, coated with an equally yummy chocolate shell and cookie bits.  There are three flavors: Chocolate, Choco Hazelnut, and Choco Caramel.

The ice cream flavors are authentic and not too sugary sweet.  The chocolate shell has the right blandness to further highlight the ice cream.  The gooey center features the concentrated taste of the ice cream, so some might find it a little overpowering.  But all in all, the Cookie Monster bars are good.

Each costs Php 20.  Not bad for a delicious dessert.  Compared to a bland ice cream bar that's pretending to be of high quality (read: Magnum)...

Best variant: Choco Hazelnut.

Try it and judge for yourself.

Master Siomai

We were in the mall one morning and we were looking for some inexpensive yet delicious food to snack on.  We spotted the almost ubiquitous cart of Master Siomai and decided to give its fare a try.

We ordered the Siomai Combo (Php 30) that has all three dim sum treats: Pork & Shrimp Siomai, Beef Siomai, and Japanese Siomai.

The Pork Siomai was a little bland, flavorless.  And it had no shrimp.  Plus, its wrapper was too soggy, almost falling apart, either because it's of low quality or it's been in the steamer for days (Hint, hint!).  The Beef Siomai was OK; twas well-seasoned and amply tasty.  But just like the pork and shrimp variant, this dumpling's wrapper was sodden.  The Japanese Siomai was flavorful.  The meat, with a tiny kani topping, was also well seasoned and its nori wrapping added a tinge of bitterness.

Look for Master Siomai in your favorite malls and try their food.  Judge for yourself.

M&M's Pretzel

Finally, an M&M's variant with a good contrast of flavors! M&M's Pretzel features a salty, crunchy baked core, covered by the famous, colored, milk chocolate shell.

The salty center perfectly complements the sweetness of the chocolate. As for texture, well, there's crunch overload!

The new Nescafé 3-in-1 Original

Something is new with the instant coffee mix we all enjoy.  The Nescafé 3-in-1 Original has become foamy and a pack now has more coffee!  But what about the taste?  Did it change too?

Unfortunately, yes.  The new mix is too sweet.  One can barely taste the coffee component.  Just like the equally new and equally foamy Nescafé Brown 'N Creamy, this one forgot the coffee and just focused on being creamy and sugary.  We miss the bitter taste, the depth of real coffee.

Truly, some good things need not be changed.

Skip drinking this one folks!

Nestlé Crunch Ice Cream

Chocolate ice cream with a Nestlé Crunch chocolate center, all covered with more chocolate and crispy rice.  Sounds good, right?  But is it...

Well, there's just too much of the milk-chocolate-sugary-sweet taste.  Had the chocolate coating been bitter, it would have been better (pun unintended) for a good flavor contrast is needed.  And we found the chocolate filling a tad too gooey and thus, messy to eat.

But we reckon that kids will love this.

Jollibee Sour Cream & Onion Crisscut Fries

In line with the Twilight saga's last film Breaking Dawn Part 2, Jollibee offers again its Crisscut Fries, now in Sour Cream & Onion flavor.

The fries itself are delicious and of high quality.  The flavoring has the convincing sharpness of sour cream and the pungency of onion, courtesy of the chive bits.  The whole thing is not too salty.

A solo order costs Php 51.  The Twilight Snack Duo (with a soda float) costs Php 75.

The KFC Double Decker

Two Original Recipe chicken fillets, bacon strips, cheese, lettuce, and mayo, all nestling between soft Kaiser buns.

Imagine that!

Is it good? Yes.  The saltiness of the chicken, bacon, and cheese is tempered by the mayo, lettuce, and bread.  Taste wise and texture wise, satisfying.

An a la carte order costs Php 145.

Try it! (Just ignore the sexist ad...)

Dark Cherry Silvana

Starbucks offers a new treat for the holiday season: the Dark Cherry Silvana.

Chocolate buttercream sandwiched between two cashew meringues, topped with a beautiful dark ganache, chocolate shavings, and a Maraschino cherry.

Is it good?  Yes.  There's a nice balance of sweetness and chocolate flavors.  We love the bittersweet chocolate top, providing good contrast to the nutty base.  What's missing though is the cherry flavor; where is it?  Aside from the one Maraschino cherry, there's no other source of cherry flavor.  So we wonder: what's with the name?

An order costs Php 95.  Try it and judge for yourself.

Art's Cream Gallery

We were in a mall one afternoon and were looking for some delicious dessert.  We chanced upon Art's Cream Gallery, a small, quaint place selling gelato.  Their fare looked yummy so we decided to stay and to give their dessert a try.

We bought 2 orders of Triple Flavor (Php 120 each) and were able to try 7 flavors: Cappuccino (free taste), Strawberry, Chocolate, Pistachio, Blueberry, Chocolate Toffee/Snickers, and Mint.

Hits:

1. Cappuccino - its flavor was authentic; it was bitter and deep, and no hint of sugary sweetness.

2. Chocolate - it was bittersweet, that's why we loved it. Not the usual milk chocolate flavor.

3. Chocolate Toffee/Snickers - had the right balance of sweetness and chocolate flavor.  Not cringe-inducing.

So-so:

1. Strawberry - it tasted more candy-ish than fruity.  It had big chunks of tart strawberries though.

2. Blueberry - it's a little bland. Just like the Strawberry, it had chunks of fresh fruit.

3. Mint - Nothing special.

Miss:

1. Pistachio - it didn't taste like pistachio.  More like candy bordering on cough syrup.

The place also sells coffee and pastries.  They have six tables where customers can sit down and enjoy their food.  Their armchair was a little uncomfortable though.

Art's Cream Gallery is on the 3rd level of Robinson's Magnolia.

Dole Dried Pineapple

Need a pineapple fix but on the go, or the fruit is not in season?  Then have some of Dole's Dried Pineapple!

They're sweet, the flavor is authentic and not artificial.  And each piece is not difficult to eat; sure, they're chewy, but not like leather.
