Cakes & Bakes Buttercream Ensaymada

Fresh, soft bread that has a good mixture of dough and air. Creamy, flavorful buttercream frosting that's not too rich and overpowering. And cheese, cheese, cheese!

It's the perfect ensaymada. Enough said.

Have it with good coffee.

Cakes & Bakes can be found at Cherry Foodarama and on the 2nd floor of the Eastwood Mall.

Mocha Silvana

It's by Starbucks.

Meringue cookies with a mocha buttercream filling, topped with chopped almonds and chocolate bits.

We love the combination of textures of this dessert: chewy meringue, crunchy nuts, velvety cream; it makes eating this treat fun.

The taste is a bit disappointing though. We think it lacks the depth and bitterness of good mocha; the interplay of coffee and chocolate flavor is too subtle to be enjoyed.

An order costs Php 95. Try it and judge for yourself.

There's a new ice cream kiosk in town y'all!

Presenting KoolStix, a new place that sells ice cream-filled barquillos. One can choose between the classic, sugary barquillos and chocolate barquillos, then fill it with either, vanilla, chocolate, or chocnut ice cream, then top it with either chocolate syrup or candy sprinkles. Fun, right?

For our first time, we chose the classics: sugary barquillos with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup.

The barquillos stick was delicious and crumbled well. The ice cream, yummy! It wasn't too sweet and was smooth and creamy. The chocolate syrup was also yummy, and had a tinge of bitterness, which we love.

Talagang "dobleng sarap sa bawat kagat!"

An order costs Php 25.

KoolStix is on the 2nd floor of SM City Marikina.

A quick word on Gong Cha

So we were in the mall and saw a newly opened Gong Cha branch. We haven't tried anything from the milk tea place so we decided to drop by.

We asked the cashier what their bestseller is, and she said Winter Melon milk tea with pearls. So we got a medium-sized cup of that (Php 95).

How was it? Well, the tea itself is good, earthy, flavorful. The pearls were well cooked, had the right chewiness. The problem was the dairy component; there was just too much milk, and it was too creamy that it overpowered the tea itself. The drink became too rich, we didn't finish it.

We admit, our experience with the Winter Melon made us think twice about going back. But we'll see...

Gong Cha is on the 3rd floor of SM City Marikina.

Brown 'N Creamy (Smooth Foam)

The "yammy" 3-in-1 coffee mix gets a face-lift. Nescafé presents the Brown 'N Creamy Smooth Foam.

Aside from having from being frothier than the original, this instant coffee variant is claimed to have a more pronounced caramel taste. And we agree. Actually, we think it's too pronounced; the drink is too sweet that the coffee flavor is overpowered. What's left is a faint bitter aftertaste.

When it comes to taste, we prefer the old Brown 'N Creamy.

What we like though is the velvety texture of the drink, very smooth and creamy.

Try it and judge for yourself.

Dole Fruit & Rice: Mango

It's mango rice pudding with mango cubes.

For those who LOVE mangoes, this snack is for you, for this treat is BURSTING with mango flavor. Fresh, vibrant, authentic mango taste with every spoonful!

We just wish that the pudding itself have better integrity. And we found biting into the rice grains weird! Sure, they add good contrast texture wise, but rice with dessert? Weird.

Try this fruity concoction and judge for yourself.

Multigrain Piattos

The famous potato chip brand gets a new visage.

Jack 'n Jill presents the Multigrain Piattos. That famous snack shape, now with a Nova look. It comes in two flavors: Bacon & Cheese and White Cheese & Garlic.

The Bacon & Cheese is good. It has a good balance of smoky and cheddar flavors. The tastes are almost authentic. As for the second, the White Cheese & Garlic, the garlicky flavor is strong, very pronounced. The dairy taste is subtle, a little too subtle actually. Both variants though are not super salt, just right.

So one would probably cheer "Finally! Healthier Piattos!" But is it really multigrain? No. Look at the ingredients. It's would be more apt to call it "multi-starch." The only grain is bran. And all those chemicals! Eeek!

False advertising much?

Delicious, yes. Multigrain, no. Then again, does anyone really expect junk food to be healthy?

Try it and judge for yourself.

Peaches in Strawberry Gel

By Dole.

Good points: Visually appealing. The gelatin is of good quality (i.e. smooth and not grainy). The peaches were fresh and juicy.

Bad point: the whole thing tastes like cough syrup. The strawberry flavor is just too artificial.

Try it and judge for yourself.

Cream-O Choco Loaded

Some chewy cookies for y'all Cream-Oholics!

The Choco Loaded cookies are soft, sweet, and tasty. And the chocolate sauce center is a good surprise for choco lovers. Although, we would've preferred more bitterness from the cookie itself or the chocolate center, this one's all right. We think kids will like it.

Perfect partner: coffee.

Try it. =)

Slim 'n Fit Wheaten Bread

It's by Gardenia.

It's bread made with lots of fiber and L Carnitine, a compound said to help weight loss (although articles say, there is no scientific evidence to back such claim).

It tastes OK, quite similar to the classic Enriched White Bread variant, although Slim 'n Fit has a yellowish color. Surprisingly, despite the fiber, this bread is not as filling as the Wholemeal variant (the green one). All in all, it's just all right.

Suggestion: Toast the bread before eating. It tastes better that way.

Century Bangus Sisig

Or should we say, Century Liver Spread.

The liver flavor is just overpowering everything. Sure, we appreciate the heat (and the chunky texture) but we want more sophisticated tastes from our sisig.

Serving suggestion: add some ground Lapid's chicharon to make it better.

Unless you LOVE liver, we say skip this one.

Nescafé Choco Latté

Some chocolaty latté y'all.

Another delicious drink of Nescafé: the 3 in 1 Choco Latté!

It has a good marriage of milk, coffee, and chocolate flavors. It's not too sweet, and we love how the dairy flavor is complemented by the subtly bitter coffee and the round chocolate tastes. It's like liquid brownie actually.

Perfect partner: cold weather. And cookies!

Try it!

Nescafé Creamy Latté

Some instant creamy white coffee y'all!

Nescafé brings you the 3 in 1 Creamy Latté.

How is it? Well, it is truly creamy, has very good consistency and thickness. The taste? OK. The milk taste is pronounced but not overpowering. And it's not too sweet. One can still sense the deep, bitter flavor of coffee. Oddly enough, it reminds us of good ice cream actually.

Perfect partner: cold, rainy weather.

Try it!

Rocky Road Cake

It's by Starbucks.

Chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate pudding layer, dappled with mallows, walnuts, and chocolate chips, covered with ganache, then finally drizzled with chocolate sauce.

It's good. The cake is moist, there's a good mixture of textures (soft mallows, crisp walnuts, smooth ganache, gooey chocolate sauce) and chocolate flavors (bitter and sweet). But the thing is, there's nothing really unique about this cake; no special quality sets it apart from all the other rocky road cakes out there. But hey, if one is looking for a satisfying chocolate fix, this one does the trick.

A slice costs Php 140 (quite pricey).

Try it and judge for yourself.

Greenwich Crispy Glazed Chicken

Another Bon Chon rival? This time from a popular pizza place.

Greenwich presents the Crispy Glazed Chicken. It's fried chicken smothered with a sauce made of honey, soy sauce, and spices (at least, according to the waiter I asked).

How is it? Well, the chicken itself is delicious: the meat is juicy, the whole thing is well seasoned, and the skin is really crispy. The glaze? Hmmm, tasty enough. It has some kick and heat, and the flavor is punctuated. The sweetness is a tad too subtle (so parents, kids may not like this). But the thing is, the sauce is just a little too runny and not shiny enough (maybe more butter?) to be called a glaze. In fact, it is too liquid that eating this chicken will be messier than usual. But again, taste wise, it's OK.

A 1-piece order with drink costs Php 89.

Go to Greenwich and judge for yourself.
