KFC Original Recipe Bites



New treat from the famous fried chicken chain.

They're basically chicken nuggets. One can have a pack of ten (Php 120), a pack of five (Php 70), or a pack of 5 with fries and drink (Php 100).


Good points: each piece is meaty and juicy. Every bite is satisfying. And the golden color makes the chicken oh so appetizing. Also, nice packaging!

Bad point: A tad too salty. The Original Recipe Bites SHOULD be eaten with the gravy and/or mashed potatoes for these can help temper the saltiness.

Go to a KFC branch and judge for yourself.

Triple Choco Squared



A new treat from Mister Donut.

A square doughnut (whut?!) filled with bavarian cream. It comes in two variants, Choco-Coffee and Choco-Caramel. And because we do not like, caramel, we chose Choco-Coffee.

Good points: the doughnut itself is good; it's soft and of good quality. We love the powdery top, adding a layer of texture to the treat. The doughnut also has good semi-sweet chocolate flavor. Another thing we like is the coffee cream. It had the right bitterness we're looking for in anything "coffee."


Bad points: the Chocolate cream is bland, very boring taste wise. And the cream itself, whether chocolate or coffee, is a tad too pasty; the consistency is weird to the palate.

All in all, the new Triple Choco Squared doughnut is not worth the trip to a Mister Donut Branch.

Greenwich Overloaded Pizzas



Yummy pizzas teeming with toppings! There are three variants to choose from: 7 Cheese, All-Meat and Cheese, and Ultimate Hawaiian.



First off, the 7 Cheese Overloaded Pizza: delicious, delicious crust, topped with a cheesy concoction of parmesan, cream cheese, cheddar, blue cheese, mozzarella, quezo de bola, and Greenwich's special cheese. It's REALLY good! A must-eat! The flavors are well-blended, made fresh with herbs. Best way to eat it? With hot sauce! The taste of the pizza with some heat...YUMMY!


Second, the All-Meat and Cheese. Again, that delicious crust, teeming with Italian sausage, salami, ground beef, pepperoni, and salami, made better with mozzarella and parmesan. It's a carnivore's dream! A few bites and one is left satisfied! The savory and smoky flavors tease and please the appetite. It goes well with a glass of cold soda.


Lastly, the Ultimate Hawaiian. Once again, that delicious crust, topped with ham, bacon, juicy sweet pineapples, bell peppers, mozzarella, and cheddar cheese. This one's for those who want their pizza meaty but light. The pineapples and bell peppers temper the heaviness of the meat and add bursts of freshness.

We were able to try all 3 flavors by buying Solo Pizzas, each costing Php 99. Imagine that: for less than Php 300, one can experience pizza paradise. =)

The French Baker Macarons



Cute and delicious meringue-based treats from the bakery cum restaurant that brings French flavors to the Philippines. They come in four flavors: chocolate, mocha, pistachio, and raspberry.

The shells are amply sweet and they crumble really well. The buttercream filling, whatever the variant, is too thin, and the flavor, a little too subtle. But the taste is authentic. Our favorite is the Mocha Macaron. We also love the fact that the Raspberry is not too tart and overpowering.


Perfect partner: coffee.

Rico's Peanut Brittle



Sweet treat from Baguio!

Thin crisps of sugar and peanuts.


The sweetness is just right, not cringe-inducing. We just wish for a little more peanut flavor though. And bigger bits of peanuts. But hey, Rico's Peanut Brittle is still delicious. Plus, they're not hard to eat, so no worries for those with dentures. =)

Perfect partner: vanilla ice cream. Or coffee.

Brickfire



Place: Cozy, hip, well-lighted. Tables are spacious and the chairs are comfortable enough. TV is too loud though.

Food: DELICIOUS! Brickfire boasts of oven-roasted (pugon) steaks. We tried the two bestsellers, The Duke and Cowgirl Annie, plus an order of Los Indios Sisig.


The Duke (Php 250). Tender, tender, tenderloin, seasoned with salt and pepper, served with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, and gravy. We had it medium rare. It was delicious! The beef was juicy, flavorful, and really good! We also loved the mashed potatoes! It was chunky and also well-seasoned. It wasn't too buttery and had good integrity. The gravy was delicious too. It wasn't too salty and had no raw flour taste. It also had good consistency, not thick, not runny. All in all, the perfect steak dish.


Next, Cowgirl Annie (Php 120). T-Bone steak with rice, steamed vegetables and the same gravy that came with The Duke. We loved this more than The Duke because the meat was sweeter. But just like the tenderloin, the meat was tender and juicy! YUMMY!


Lastly, Los Indios Sisig (Php 150): crispy pork bits, sweet white onions, and bits of finger chili. It's savory with hints of freshness and sweetness from the onions, with the right amount of heat. This one should be eaten with LOTS of rice.

Must-eats: Everything mentioned


Price: Considering food quality, taste, and serving size (not to mention plating), prices are reasonable.

Service: Waiting time was acceptable. The staff? Well, the waitresses we talked to weren't friendly and knowledgeable about the food they're selling. So, there.

Lucky Me Supreme Jjamppong



Instant Korean-style spicy seafood noodle soup.

Good points: the noodles are of good quality. They don't get soggy easily and they have a bite to them.

Not-so-good points: The taste is ordinary, forgettable. We know it's just an instant noodle dish but my God, the product should at least match the marketing hype. Lucky Me Supreme Jjamppong tastes like Nissin's Seafood Cup: mostly salt, inauthentic. The only difference is Lucky Me's is hotter, much hotter.


Well, at least the heat of this noodle soup will keep us warm during those cold, rainy nights.

Star Linam-Ham

It's sweet ham infused with Star Margarine.

Is it good? Well, it's O-K. The meat is juicy, sweet enough. We just find it a tad too rich. Some more salt would balance things out.

Sun Chips Harvest Cheddar



Thin crispy multigrain chips, dusted with the right amount of salt and cheese powder.

Delicious. Flavors aren't too strong, not overpowering, and are authentic tasting.

KFC Yoghurt Krushers

Refreshing shakes [supposedly] made with real fruit and yogurt.

There are 3 flavors: Mango Mania, Strawberry Lush, and Berry Banana. We tried them all.


Good points: The drinks had good consistency; they were creamy and easy to sip. And they had enough bits of "fruit" to nibble at.

Bad points: All 3 drinks tasted like cough syrup. We barely sensed any natural flavor, neither yogurt, nor fruit. Twas like drinking cold, creamy medicine.

All in all, we say skip these Krushers. Just buy real fruit shakes.

Crunchy toasts oozing with butter cum margarine flavor (DELICIOUS!), sprinkle with just the right amount of sugar. What we loved eating were the crusts, what with the slightly burnt flavor, having more depth taste wise.

Estrel's Caramel Cake



Delicious, soft chiffon cake, covered with a decadent caramel icing, decorated with beautiful and velvety buttercream roses.

Now THAT is a cake.


The thing we loved about Estrel's Caramel Cake was the good marriage of flavors. It had the right amount of sweetness; it wasn't cringe-inducing. The cake itself was bland enough to be a good canvass for the full caramel flavor of the icing. The roses provided just a hint of saltiness, tempering things. It's perfect, really.

Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino



The newest drink from Starbucks.

How was it? Well, the coffee flavor was too subtle, making us question if we're really drinking mocha (for a second, we thought of Brown Cow). And we think the drink was a tad too sweet. We liked nibbling the cookie bits though.

A Tall order of the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino costs Php 165 (pricey!).

Rice snacks from Monde.

We were given two flavors to try: Sweet Crisps and Corn Cheese. The first had the right amount of candy sweetness (provided by the white swirls). It blended well with the general blandness of the snack. The Corn Cheese had the right balance of sweetness and saltiness; the marriage of the sweet corn and cheddar cheese tastes made the snack satisfying. It is the better variant.


One One rice snacks are fun to eat because they're both crunchy and airy. YUMMY!
