Flavored SkyFlakes

One, Onion & Chives. The other, Cheese.

The first one is a little sweet (just like white onions), but this sweetness is complemented by a hint of pungency from the chive confetti. The taste is punctuated.

The second variant has a sharp cheddar taste, but it's not too salty. It's actually funner to snack on than chips, as some cheese-flavored chips tend to be REALLY salty.

Perfect partner: Good soup.

Musing on dumpling

One morning, we were seriously craving for dumplings. So we went to the mall, dropped by Paotsin and Hen Lin and ordered some shark's fin dumplings with rice. From Paotsin, we got fried dumplings on Hainanese rice (Php 50), and from Hen Lin, steamed ones with fried rice (Php 51).

The shark's fin (read: it's really pork) dumplings from Paotsin were delicious! The filling was flavorful, and the dumplings themselves were perfectly fried. They were golden, crispy on the right places, and weren't too oily. Now, the Hainanese rice. Well, it's freaking green! And it tasted like tinola with malunggay (maybe that's why it's green). SO not Hainanese. But hey, it's not bad, just weird.

Hen Lin's steamed shark's fin dumplings were flavorful and packed. And the fried rice? Yummy! It was garlicky and really tasty. And it wasn't too oily. And the yellow color just made it more appetizing. Well, at least to us it was.

Steamed and fried dumplings. Different textures. Both delicious. Same satisfaction. Happy eaters!

Have your own dumpling day and try these treats from Hen Lin and Paotsin.

Hen Lin and Paotsin are on the first floor of SM City Marikina.

Marikina Bakery's Chocolate Cake

The cake itself is moist and amply delicious. A little problem with its integrity, but that's negligible. The chocolate frosting is not too sweet and has enough semi-sweet chocolate flavor. It's also not too pasty. Now, the other frostings, the brightly colored ones, they're a little problematic. They are grainy, rough to the tongue. And they're salty! Odd, I know. Too bad because they're pretty to look at. Oh well...

Marikina Bakery is along W. Paz St., Sta. Elena, Marikina City.

More food from Café Lidia

Roast Pork loin: tender slices of lean, juicy pork, smothered with REALLY good gravy (no raw flour flavor, not salty), paired with delicious, creamy, buttery mashed potatoes.

Baked Spaghetti and Meatballs: a hearty pasta dish consisting of well-cooked noodles, a tangy (not for kids) marinara sauce, and packed, well-seasoned meat balls. It makes for good comfort food.

Buffalo Wings: Spicy, tangy chicken wings. The dish has a good balance of flavors. We just wished the wings were bigger.

Mocha Sans Rival: chewy meringue, crunchy cashew bits, and velvety mocha cream. Perfection! It's a must-eat.

Almond Rocha: For those who want their coffee fun, nutty, and with hints of toffee and mocha, this drink is for you!

Experience good food and try all these treats at Café Lidia (64 Calderon St., Brgy. Calumpang, Marikina City)!

Café Lidia

Place: Rustic and old-fashioned: wooden furnishings, yellow, orange, and brown hues. The restaurant is very homey actually. And even if the place is packed, it is not annoyingly noisy inside.

Food: Very delicious. One can sense the freshness and the authentic flavors of the ingredients.

The Caesar's Salad has fresh vegetables, well-baked croutons, and a dressing that has the right amount of saltiness and the perfect creamy consistency. What's also good is that the salad is not drowning in dressing; each leaf is just amply coated and flavored.

The House Pizza Special is a thin-crust pizza with the usual toppings of ham, ground meat, bell peppers, good cheese, etc. It's light and delicious. It's perfect for a simple and easy lunch.

The Pasta with Sausage, Mushroom, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes It tastes like good pizza. Its sauce is oil-based, and it has sun-dried tomatoes, bell peppers, and chunks of what taste like German sausages. It's really good. Thank God that the sausage flavor is not strong enough to dominate the whole dish.

The Seafood Pasta is also good. What's great about it is that it doesn't taste fishy. Actually, the marinara sauce's well-balanced flavors are really pronounced. The dish has a good amount of clams and other seafood bites. It's very satisfying.

The Beef Salpicao is a must-must-eat! The bite-size tender beef pieces are also well-marinated and well-sautéed with lots of garlic, and mushrooms. Absolutely delicious! And those mashed potatoes...YUMMY!

The Ribeye Steak is juicy and well-marinated. And it's big, big enough for a heavy meal.

The Grandma's Chocolate Cake is O-K. It has good chocolate flavor but the ganache is a tad too pasty. Good thing the cake itself is moist.

The Café Mocha is really good. It has a good marriage of coffee and chocolate flavors. It rivals the expensive one offered by Starbucks. It's the perfect end to any meal.

Must-eats: Beef Salpicao, Pasta with Sausage, Mushroom and Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Seafood Pasta, House Pizza Special, Café Mocha

Price: Considering the serving size and food quality, the prices are reasonable. One can have a hearty meal for Php 200-300. And there's no service charge.

Service: Waiters are pleasant and attentive. Waiting time between dishes is acceptable.

Café Lidia is at 64 Calderon St., Brgy. Calumpang, Marikina City.

Red Ribbon Creamy Carbonara

Al dente spaghetti noodles, coated with a savory white sauce, topped with a generous serving of chicken chunks, mushrooms, and bacon bits.

The sauce has good consistency and flavor. There's no raw egg or burnt milk taste. It also has the right saltiness. The chicken chunks are also well-seasoned, delicious and are tender enough to bite into.

The Creamy Carbonara is so satisfying, one serving is enough to make one full for the whole day (or until the next meal).

Perfect partner: Yummy Cheese Roll

Cheezy Bacon Pasta Bowl

It's by KFC.

Imagine: pasta smothered with cheese sauce, topped with bacon bits and chunks of KFC Original Recipe chicken! YUMMY!

The noodles were well-cooked, al dente. The cheese sauce had good consistency and was bland enough to showcase the smoky flavor of the bacon bits and the saltiness of the chicken. YUMMY!

We think this Cheezy Bacon Pasta Bowl is the ultimate comfort food!

Go to KFC and try it now!

Chocolate Caramel Chip Cake

It's by Starbucks.

A decadent dessert, consisting of layers of moist chocolate cake, sinful chocolate cream, delicious bittersweet chocolate meringue, and flavorful caramel chips.

It's the ultimate chocolate cake.

We loved the good marriage of sweet and bitter, as well as the play of textures (soft cake, crunchy meringue, velvety cream, smooth chocolate top, and nibbly caramel chips). We enjoyed eating (not to mention looking) at this treat!

Perfect partner: coffee.

Rocky Road Romance Drumstick

It's by Nestlé.

Dark and milk chocolate ice cream dappled with chopped peanuts, topped with mini-marshmallows and chocolate shavings. All this yumminess nestles (pun intended) inside a sugar cone with a delicious dark chocolate tip. Mouth-watering, right?

What we loved was that this ice cream cone wasn't too sugary sweet, that the flavors were distinct. And as always, we ENJOYED eating the chocolate tip of the cone. It's our fave!

Go ahead and beat the summer heat with the fun and yummy Rocky Road Romance! Try it!

Shogun Burger

Or as some would say, Shogun Baa-gaa. It's by Tokyo Tokyo.

It consists of a juicy beef patty, smothered with a sweet & smoky teriyaki sauce, topped with a slice of mild cheddar cheese and perfectly fried onion rings. All these treats nestle between slices of soft buns.

We enjoyed eating the Shogun Burger (Php 90). The patty was moist and tasty. The sauce was equally delicious and we liked the fact that there wasn't a lot of it in the burger (too much sauce will make eating the whole thing messy). We also liked the onion rings; they added the needed layer of crunchy texture and a hint of sweetness that complemented the flavor of the teriyaki sauce. Yummy!

Perfect partner: more onion rings!

Go to Tokyo Tokyo and try the Shogun Burger now!

Magnum Chocolate Truffle

Chocolate-ice-cream-cum-truffle-ripple on a stick, covered with a smooth Belgian chocolate shell.

The chocolate ice cream is a little bland, becoming a good canvass for the delicious flavors of the truffle and the chocolate shell. We love the hint of bitterness from the truffle and the slight depth from the shell. Compared to the other two Magnum flavors (Classic and Almond), Magnum Chocolate Truffle isn't cringe-inducing as it has the right amount of sweetness and milk chocolate taste.

A Magnum Chocolate Truffle costs Php 50. Try it!

Gastronomic Goodies from Gerry's Grill

Coco Water & Coco Shake

Both by Coco Fresco.

For just Php 70, one can buy a big bottle of very cold and very refreshing Coco Water. Authentic coconut water, take note. No added sugar, just the right sweetness, as Mother Nature intended.

Another refreshing treat from Coco Fresco is the Coco Shake. It's a mixture of coconut water, minced coconut meat, milk, and flavored syrup. There are many variants to choose from: Ube, Pandan, Caramel, Strawberry, etc. We chose Pandan (Php 45 for Grande size).

It wasn't too sweet, and we could sense the coconut flavor. It was actually like drinking good ice cream. The pandan flavor though was a little too subtle, too faint. And the drink would've been better had it had something we could nibble on, like pandan jelly. But hey, the drink was good nonetheless.

Drop by Coco Fresco and beat the summer heat with these delicious coconut concoctions.

Coco Fresco is on the 2nd floor of SM City Masinag.
